Disable CTRL-ALT-DEL on SLES server

By default pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL at the console of a SLES initiates and immediate reboot. Not the best situation for a server. Follow the steps below to disable CTRL-ALT-DEL.

  1. Open /etc/inittab
  2. Look for ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -r -t 4 now
  3. Change it to ca::ctrlaltdel:/bin/echo "CTRL-ALT-DEL has been disabled." or rem out the line.
  4. Run init q to reload init.
  5. Test by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL at the console.

Why is my SLES11 SP1 server running the PAE kernel instead of VMI?

Here is the explanation from the SLES11 SP1 release notes.

“Since VMWare and Novell and the community did improve the infrastructure in the kernel in a way that VMI is not necessary any more, starting with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 the seperate VMI kernel flavor is now obsolete and therefore was dropped from the media. Upon upgrade it would be automatically replaced by the PAE kernel flavour, which assures customers can take advantage of all the features which were included in the separate VMI kernel flavour.”

Renaming a NIC in SLES10

If you ever swap a NIC in a computer running SLES10 you will notice the new NIC will become eth1 instead of eth0. I ran into this very problem and thought I would pass on a well explained solution.

WordPress, Jetpack, and 1&1

After enabling Jetpack on this site I started having problems viewing old posts or using the editor toolbar in the admin interface. A few times I received “500 internal server error.”  After some searching I found that I needed to add the following lines to my root .htaccess.

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php

Please be sure to add the lines after # END WordPress line otherwise the settings may get wiped out.
